PAJALA Bistro Set by IKEA

Designed c. 1990’s
No longer in production

IKEA, the Swedish furniture megachain, requires little introduction. The first IKEA in the United States opened in 1985 in Pennsylvania, and expanded to California after purchasing STØR Furnishings International in 1992. While now ubiquitous in US homes, most of the American public was unfamiliar with IKEA designs when DS9 premiered in 1993. This may be why set decorators were able to get away with using IKEA products so liberally in the show. Their PAJALA tables and chairs were used in Deep Space Nine episodes, “Homefront, “in Sisko’s Creole Kitchen, and “Nor the Battle to the Strong,” in the Ajilon Prime field hospital mess hall.
