Tongue Chair by Jaymar Furniture

Designed c. 1980’s
No longer in production

Jaymar is a Quebec-based Canadian furniture company established in 1956. Their Tongue Chair, produced circa the 1980’s, emulates the soft, sculptural styles of Pierre Paulin, Louis Durot, and Verner Panton. Two Tongue armchairs were used in the Picard episode, “Disengage,” in Sneed’s office on M’Talas Prime.

Star Trek + Design previously misattributed these chairs to Marcello Ziliani's Smile armchair, a virtually identical design from in 2007. However, a closer look marks subtle differences. The thin, flat armrests of the Tongue Chairs differentiate the design from the thick, rounded arms of Ziliani's Smile chair, which is why I’ve changed the attribution to that of Jaymar.
