Dimension 2400 Lounge Chair by Arthur Umanoff for Madison Industries

Designed 1950’s
No longer in production

Arthur Umanoff was a mid century American designer, whose work drew heavily from Danish modernism. Prolific in the 1950′s and 60′s, he is best known to Trekkies as the designer who created the Captain’s Chair. Or rather, the base for it, and he didn’t mean to do it for Star Trek. Set designer Matt Jefferies (for whom the “Jefferies Tubes” are named) added the leather upholstery and bulky consoles, rendering the original chair nearly unrecognizable save for the curved, wooden armrests.
