Follia Chair by Giuseppe Terragni
Designed 1934
In production through Zanotta
Giuseppe Terragni was an Italian architect, industrial designer, and fascist sycophant under the Mussolini regime. Most of his architectural projects were built in Como, Italy, where his brother served as the Fascist Podestà (mayor) and he benefitted from political connections. During WWII, he was sent to the Eastern Front, where he suffered a nervous breakdown following the Italian collapse near Stalingrad, and died shortly afterward. His Follia chair was used in the TNG episode, “The Most Toys,” as part of Kivas Fajo’s collection, and the DS9 episode, “Prodigal Daughter,” in the home of Yanas Tigan. While I was disappointed to learn of Star Trek using the design work of such a singularly despicable person, it isn’t necessarily thematically inconsistent with the personal ethos of either Fajo, as a kidnapper and unscrupulous collector, or the Tigan family (Ezri excluded), as the owners of a pergium mine with ties to the Orion Syndicate.
