Miura Stool by Konstantin Grcic for Plank
Designed 2005
In production through Plank
Konstantin Grcic is a German industrial designer, known for playful geometric furniture and household objects. He grew up in Wuppertal prior to moving to the United Kingdom to study, first, cabinet-making at the John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood, and later, design at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1991, he returned to Germany to found his own studio, Konstantin Grcic Design. His Miura chair was designed for Plank, on a commission for a monoblock plastic barstool. It marked an intentional departure from his earlier work, especially his popular chair_ONE, as Grcic wrote, “although I love the stealth-bomber aesthetic, I felt threatened by the trap of repeating myself with this successful formula.”
Several Miura stools were used in Strange New Worlds, as set dressing for the Enterprise’s sick bay. The presence of several sculptural barstools (which are almost never sat in onscreen) in the ship’s sick bay seems like a bit of a visual nod to the Frenesí stools of Voyager.
