Colorstone Plum Tableware by Massimo and Lella Vignelli for Sasaki

Designed 1985
No longer in production

Massimo and Lella Vignelli were an Italian husband-and-wife design duo and founders of Vignelli Associates. While well known for their graphic and industrial design work within the design community, their most famous contribution is recognizable to anyone familiar with New York City’s subway system. The Vignelli subway map was used by the MTA from 1972 until 1979, when it was recalled due to issues with scaling which confused commuters. It’s still remembered as one of the most visually interesting in the subway’s history, for it’s tasteful minimalism and clean, colorful lines.

The Vignellis’ work for Sasaki included several tableware designs, among them the Colorstone line, which was produced in a variety of colors. The Colorstone Plum plates and bowls were used in several episodes of Deep Space Nine, most prominently in O’Brien and Keiko’s quarters and in Quark’s Bar.
